Hi, I’m Meagan Schirrmacher, a Registered Provisional Psychologist in Edmonton, Alberta. I am
passionate about supporting teens and young adults navigating different challenges, holding space to
experience and heal.
I hold a Master of Counselling from City University and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Grant MacEwan University. In my previous life, I was passionate about youth work with marginalized youth populations. I have experience in both outreach relationship building capacities with harder to reach individuals, and in the residential in-patient mental health realm with adolescents. Additionally, I have experience in both non-profit and private practice organizations, and have previously had the joy of learning in an animal and equine assisted practice as well. My primary focus is teens and young adults experiencing diverse challenging mental health situations including emotional distress, depression,
anxiety, difficulties with life transitions, grief and loss, parental divorce or conflict, children who have been in Government care, and addictions.
My practice is eclectic and tailored to the individual I work with; however, I always focus on a strengths based, person centric approach to therapy. From there, I will draw on the different theories to find the best fit for whatever challenges being faced at this time.
I have always had an interest in psychology and mental health. My great aunt was a teacher at Wagner here in Edmonton and she primarily had the teenagers struggling with behavioral challenges. She loved the work, and even after she retired, I would spend time with her and she would have students who were well into their adult years who would stop by and visit her.
Her focus on putting the relationship first, believing everyone was doing the best in a situation with what they had in that moment, and her keen understanding that everyone had their own story and we needed to approach with curiosity all primed me for a career working with teenagers myself. She was also the first adult I recall who talked to
me as if I had something valuable to say and didn’t just treat me like I was a kid, and that was life changing. I figured if I could be to others even a fraction of what she was, then I was doing well.
In my non-work life, I’m spending time enjoying the chaos of my family and getting lots of attention from my cats Lily, Witchy, and Cas, and my dog Leia. You might find me curled up with a mystery novel and a hot cup of coffee, or settling in with a horror movie and some snacks.
If you’re ready to take the first step towards something new, I invite you to reach out by phone or online booking. I would love to walk this journey with you. Contact me today to schedule a consultation.
